The Surprising Thing About Sugar

I haven’t stopped being surprised since I gave up sugar 18 months ago.

I was surprised that I stopped getting headaches (everyone gets headaches, right?) and that my tummy aches subsided and disappeared.  I was surprised that my appetite decreased.  I was surprised that I have so much more energy and that I have a clarity of mind that I have never had before.

I wasn’t initially surprised that I lost weight as that’s a given, but I was surprised that I didn’t even think about it and it still happened.  I eat a lot of clean, real food. You might call it all just ‘ingredients’.  If it’s been processed then I tend to stay away.  I eat 3 good meals a day and 2 or 3 snacks and my weight (or size as I don’t weigh myself) remains constant.  Surprising, no?

When I am awake I am always awake, and have loads of energy, happy to do things, willing to learn.  No longer the ‘feeling constantly tired in need of my next caffeine and sugar hit’ person I used to be.  That’s really surprising.

But a couple of things have totally surprised me recently.  This is the first year that I have not been affected by the dark winter.  Usually I struggle through the winter months with little energy, low moods and craving sunlight.  I didn’t even give it a second thought this year.

I have also realised that my hair has changed.  A couple of years ago it was really thinning and falling out almost in clumps… now it’s fine again, growing back thicker and healthier.

The final surprise that I’m feeling right now in April – and I will need to revisit and conclude this by the end of the summer – is hayfever.  Usually I am sneezing and will have an itchy throat because of tree pollen at this time of year but I’ve barely had any symptoms.  Hopefully I’ll be surprised by the autumn to find that even my hayfever has been cured by giving up sugar… I certainly hope so.

  1. Hi London Health Mum
I have just found your blog this morning. It is a great thing that you spread the word about eating less/no sugar benefits.
I live in Scotland for the last 13 years but I am originally from Poland and experienced low moods/energy every winter until I gave up on eating sugar more than 2 years ago. Last winter was so much better in terms of moods and for me the greatest benefit is stable energy levels throughout the day. Every day. One thing that surprised me most was that I stopped getting flu or cold. I always had a flu at least 2/year and usually that meant 1 week off work with sinusitis as an added “bonus”.
I don’t think I would ever want to go back to eating a standard diet, and I am very happy that there are more and more people that are becoming conscious eaters.
Thank you and please keep blogging 😃
    Best wishes
    Lucy
